The Comforter is the Holy Spirit

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4).

The Comforter
Jesus said: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: For if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you” (John 16:7).

Jesus left us in no doubt about the identification of the Comforter. He said: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things …” (John 14:26). This comfort (consolation, solace, stability, support, refreshment, brightness, rest, and quietness) is the most comprehensive assistance through all that life brings our way, and it is available to all. And as per the first verse, we are to comfort one another just as we are comforted.

There is no substitute for the benefits of Holy Spirit and the comfort brought to those who receive this experience. Other options are unsatisfactory and because they are of human origin are relatively brief, terminal and illusory.
