What makes the best church?
When looking to find God, or a place to worship Him, are there certain things that you weigh up when deciding which church or “way” is right for you? Cause after all, the best church, the right church, the true church surely should suit you, shouldn’t it?
Is the location, service times, entertainment value, social offerings, moving song sessions, charitable works, number of people important to you? Or maybe you are looking for a church that says what you already believe, the truth according to you?
Or does it make more sense that if you are going to follow God, it would be fundamental to do it His way, even if that’s not yours, or convenient or as socially comfortable as you’d like?
The right and best church may have some or all of the things above, but let’s get the perspective and measure from God’s Word about whether church should be what we want … or what God wants! And let’s do it simply by quoting scripture … God’s word!
– Do I even need to go to church?
Hebrews 10: 24-25 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
– Do the numbers in the church matter?Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
– Is there actually a truth or do all roads lead to heaven?
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
– Should I just believe what I hear or expect some kind of personal proof?
1 Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
– Is belief enough without action?
James 1:21- 25 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
– Do I have to live a certain way to make God happy even if I believe and take action?
Galatians 5: 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
– What did Jesus say?
Mark 16: 15 – 20 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
So as you can see, God does want us to get together as His church. He does want us to worship Him in truth … not in man’s wisdom … but in demonstration of the Spirit and Power. Belief is not enough. He wants our active worship in word and deed … and ultimately, He doesn’t care one iota about the number of people, the entertainment value or the convenience, He cares about truth and action!
Our encouragement is to not look for a church that just suits you, but one that suits God. This means you measure a church by its reliance on God’s word to know how to worship in spirit and in truth even if that means it’s provoking or challenging 😊 Don’t hesitate to ask us for more information because we pride ourselves on using God’s word to understand God … and he backs it up with evidence … which is called a “signs following” ministry. Putting it simply, it’s God’s truth … with personal proof!
