Raising Children with God’s Faith
Where can you get wisdom and comfort when bringing up your children?
Parenting young children can be a daunting task. The choices that parents must make and the parenting advice that is available seems endless, especially when raising children in this age of social media. Many parents find that they are constantly evaluating whether they are “doing it right” when it comes to raising their children and this can be exhausting. Being a parent is an enormous job and it is the most important role that many of us will fulfil so we are naturally keen to give our children the best possible start in life.
As our children grow older and start to ask questions about the world we live in, and about life & death, we want to give them the answers they need to feel safe and secure, whilst at the same time many of us worry about our children’s wellbeing.
It is comforting to know that God, too, is a parent. Luckily for us, He is the wisest parent of all, and we can lean on Him as we navigate the ups and downs of raising a family. Day by day, He is constant, and He loves us, just as we love our own children. Like any good parent, He wants what is best for us and is always keen to hear from us about what we are thinking, what we are feeling, what we are worried about and what makes us happy. (Psalm 34:19, 1 Peter 3:12) He made the incredible sacrifice of His own son Jesus Christ because He loved us enough to want us to have His free gift of salvation. (John 3:16. Acts 2:1-4, 37-39)
When you receive the Holy Spirit, you can truly call God your Father. (Galatians 4:6-7). Being a Spirit-filled parent is such a different experience because it allows you to have God’s comfort in every situation, whether it be large or small. When it comes to parenting, it brings peace knowing that you (and your children) are in God’s hands and He has a plan for you as well as them. You can then teach your children to turn to His word for answers to life’s questions, and lean on Him during any situation that comes their way. Having the assurance of hope for the future, come what may, is a precious legacy to give them. (Ephesians 6:4)
