Does John 3:16 really mean that belief is enough for everlasting life?

Believers

The scripture of John 3:16 appears on face value to provide a very simple and straight forward direction on how a person can receive everlasting life. However, when read in context and in light of many other scriptures it can soon be seen to be just a part of the information that we need to understand the full salvation message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The verses preceding John 3:16 start with an account of Jesus talking to a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus. Jesus clearly articulates to him (and us) what needs to happen before a person can see (understand) and enter the kingdom of God.

Jesus said a person must be born of water and of the Spirit. Jesus was referring to full immersion water baptism and to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. These events are also recorded elsewhere in scripture such as in Matthew 3:11, Acts 2:1-4, Acts 2:37-39, Acts 10:44-48, Mark 16:16-18 and many more.

Therefore, we should ask ourselves what is the belief John 3:16 is referring to? In James 2:9 the scriptures tell us that the devils (those opposing God) believe, so belief on its own cannot be enough for salvation because we surely know that those that oppose God are not saved. We must act on our belief, that is the defining difference, and be doers of the word and not just hearers as we read in James 1:22.

So, in context, anyone who truly believes in Jesus Christ will do what He says. Only then the promise of eternal life in the kingdom of God is made available. To Nicodemus it all seemed confusing. When read in context and fullness of scripture we can see it is not confusing but clear and direct.
