Speaking in Tongues is to speak in a new unlearned language miraculously. The gift of Tongues is spoken of prophetically in the Old Testament: “For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they all may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord”, (Zephaniah 3:9). Jesus said believers would speak with new tongues (Mark 16:17). Sure enough, when the day of Pentecost came, that’s exactly what happened.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4)

When did it start?

Speaking in Tongues first happened on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after the death of Jesus, at the moment the Church began. Speaking in Tongues was the very first utterance made by the Church. It was the first crowd-gatherer at what became the first outreach of the Church. It was the subject matter of the first question asked of the Church. It was also the cause of the first sermon of the Church.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God – 1 Corinthians 14:2

On the day the Church began, the Apostle Peter explained that Speaking in Tongues was the sign of the coming of the promised Holy Spirit. He said that Jesus, who had died at their hands and was now raised from the dead, was the one who was sending the Holy Spirit with this accompanying sign.

Is it important?

Speaking in Tongues was prominent at the birth of the Church and its use is not diminished by the passage of time. The gift of Tongues has a described role in Church meetings, and its significance for the individual believer is amply demonstrated by the momentous timing of its introduction. Indeed, Paul the apostle, in the midst of instruction to a church that had ‘gone overboard’ in its use of speaking in tongues in public meetings, nevertheless made this statement:

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all – Paul the Apostle (1 Corinthians 14:18)

The same experience

Receiving the Holy Spirit today is the same as it was then. It is a personal experience. And the same clear and unmistakeable ‘receipt’ is given to all who have received God’s Holy Spirit. In the Bible we read of those in the Church having been “sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13). The Holy Spirit Himself is the seal we are given. Speaking in tongues is the outward manifestation of this inner reality.
Is this for today? Some say that speaking in tongues passed away during the time of the Bible. This is clearly wrong. The Holy Spirit is still being sent to people today, with the same outcome as in Bible days. They speak in tongues. It is also known as tongues of fire..

Is it for you?

Why speak in tongues? Apart from being the unmistakeable and personal evidence of having received the Holy Spirit, and apart from its use in meetings of the Church, speaking in tongues has further personal benefits.
Paul the Apostle spoke of his personal prayer life in this way: “I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also…” (1 Corinthians 14:15). The context makes it clear that “praying with the spirit” is him speaking in tongues in his prayer life. In the last of the letters to the early church in the Bible, Jude, having opened his letter with talk of the “common salvation” they enjoyed, gives this advice to the Church during a period when false teachers were infiltrating it: “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost…” (Jude 20). You must be filled with the Holy Spirit to ‘pray in the Holy Spirit’. The advice (to all in the Church) was to spend time praying in tongues that they may be built up in their faith.
Some can’t see the benefit. But Paul the Apostle was glad that he spoke in tongues. So are we. Rather than rely on religious opinions, ask God to confirm your believing, with ‘signs following’. It’s about having the full experience of God and his blessings.

The Holy Spirit Experience

Acts 2:38 “...and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” … The Holy Spirit experience is for all…

We believe we are baptised into the Body of Christ (the Church) through the Holy Spirit
In the Bible we read:

for by one Spirit are we all baptised into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13)

Receiving the Holy Spirit is essential to join the church. Without it, we are not yet in the “one body”.

Different terms, same experience

There are several terms used interchangeably in the Bible; all speaking of the same definite experience:

“filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4)

“baptised with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5)

“Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8)

“receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38)

Holy Spirit to fall on them (Acts 8:15-17)

The coming of the Holy Spirit foretold by Jesus

Jesus prepared His disciples for the coming of the Holy Spirit. He first told them He would be going away, but then gave this encouragement:

… I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you (John 14:16-18, emphasis added)

Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit experience. He makes this absolutely clear a few verses later:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things… (John 14:26 emphasis added)

The Holy Spirit had been with them, but a new phase was about to begin; it would now be in them. This happened for the first time on the day of Pentecost. We can read about what happened in Acts chapter 2:

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place… And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:1, 4)

Is being filled with the Holy Spirit automatic after believing?

Some preach that the receiving of the Holy Spirit is automatic upon believing and that therefore whether or not there is an accompanying sign is irrelevant. But in Acts 8 we read of those in Samaria who had “received the word of God” but still needed prayer “that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus”). Although they had believed and were baptised, they had not yet received the Holy Spirit. Philip, and then the apostles in Jerusalem, were aware of this (meaning it was clear that they had not yet received the Holy Spirit, and also clear that whether the Spirit had been receieved was something that could be determined by an observer).
When they eventually did receive the Holy Spirit, the occasion was so dramatic that the con-man Simon offered money for a similar ‘power’.

In the Revival Centres Church, everyone has received the Holy Spirit with a definite experience

The receiving of the Holy Spirit experience should be the confident expectation of all who repent and are baptised. But if you do not speak in other tongues you do not yet have God’s confirmation on your steps of faith.
Do not settle for any less than the full Bible experience. The apostles thought it necessary to come down and pray to ensure that the Samaritan believers received the Holy Spirit. We read in the Bible:

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9)

If you want to receive the Holy Spirit Experience for yourself, then you need only ask. See Here for more details.

His Death, Resurrection and the Holy Spirit

We believe in the full gospel of Jesus Christ. ‘The Gospel’ simply means the ‘good message’. In the four gospels in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) the good news of the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is told. It then all points towards the Holy Spirit Experience.

He died for you

Jesus knew He was to die. The prophets had foreshadowed the sacrifice He was to make. When John the Baptist met Jesus for the first time he said: “Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.” This description had a specific meaning. In the Old Testament of the Bible God had used animal sacrifice as a means of teaching people about the consequence of sin. The Bible tells us that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Sin always results in death (Romans 6:23). In the Old Testament, God allowed the death of animals to be a temporary substitute for this death.

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world – John the Baptist (John 1:29)

However, the temporary animal sacrifices did not solve the underlying problem – Sin. Paul the Apostle explained (Hebrews 10) that animal sacrifice was not sufficient to take away sin. God had ordained a perfect sacrifice, one that would be sufficient for all mankind for those that accepted it. That sacrifice was Jesus Himself. He opened to door for Salvation for You and Me.

Because all have sinned, and sin always leads to death, we have a great need for a Saviour. Jesus is that Saviour. He died on behalf every human being, including you. The Death and Resurrection of Jesus the Christ was a pivotal point in history indeed.

He rose from the dead

The empty tomb of Jesus is the pivotal fact of Christianity. All the claims Jesus made were vindicated in this one fact that sets Christianity apart from all religions. He is risen… ; The whole salvation message only makes sense because he rose again, otherwise the new age could not be offered to mankind and we would all be stuck in the “Old Testament” covenant.

The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11) – so that he may send the comforter – the Holy Spirit so that man can be saved.

His Death and Resurrection

In a nutshell, because of his great sacrifice, the Holy Spirit could be poured out to anyone that asks, so that we may be saved. This same Spirit that raised Christ from the Dead can now fill you too. If you want to know more about the Holy Spirit Experience, then we can help show you relevant scriptures on this part of God’s wonderful plan.
